NKT Photonics A/S
NKT is the world’s leading supplier of supercontinuum sources for the visible to near-IR spectrum. NKT Photonics A/S is the result of a 2009 merger 2009 between Crystal Fibre A/S – the largest commercial supplier of micro-structured specialty fibre and Koheras A/S – the leading company within ultra-precise fibre lasers and supercontinuum sources. In 2016 NKT Photonics has grown further by merging with its sister company LIOS Technology (DE) and the acquisition of Fianium (UK), previously the second biggest supplier of supercontinuum sources. In 2005 NKT launched the visible fibre-based supercontinuum white light laser and today the product “SuperK” has become the industrial standard for broad band white light lasers covering the 400-2400 nm region. This success in the visible domain has inspired NKT to start developing mid-IR supercontinuum sources for the 1.7-4.7 µm region in 2010. Even though only prototypes have yet been released for sale NKT is one now of the world leaders in the mid-IR supercontinuum field having in 2014 demonstrated both the worlds widest spectra and highest reliability for this type of sources. NKT currently has approx 200 employees out of which 50 are working on R&D within the field of fibre optics.
Main tasks in FLAIR
Responsible of WP4.1: Development of a mid-IR supercontinuum source with an optimized spectral power in the working range. At the same time NKT will develop this into the world’s smallest and lightest supercontinuum to date in order to allow its operation on a drone.
