Department of Photonics Engineering
DTU Fotonik is a department of the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) with over 200 employees, performing world-leading technological research in areas as diverse as nanophotonics, optical fibers, nonlinear optics, lasers, optical sensing, optical transmission systems, networks, coding, and THz science. DTU Fotonik spins off on average 1 company per year, incl. NKT Photonics, CISILIAS, MMP, Alight Technologies, OCT Innovation, CommWyse, Windar, IRSee, and SHUTE Sensing Solutions. DTU Fotonik offers intl. Master Degrees in Photonics, Telecommunication, and Physics and Nanotechnology, and it graduates 25+ Ph.D. students and 50+ M.Sc. students per year, emphasizing education of highly skilled students with durable collaboration with industry.
Main tasks in FLAIR
Mainly in WP4 (Sensor Subsystems Development and Integration): Development of the long-wavelength 8-12µm mid-IR supercontinuum (SC) source with an optimized spectral power in the working range and a minimal footprint and power consumption. This will include both direct diode modulated pump laser development and in-house chalcogenide mid-IR step- index fiber design and fabrication, as well using their R&D agreement with Selenoptics in France to develop optimized chalcogenide photonic crystal fibres. DTU will also be in charge of SC and nonlinear fibre modelling, as well as mid-IR fibre dispersion measurements to assist NKT’s development of the 2- 5µm source.
